Acupuncture
& Laser Therapy
We can provide veterinary acupuncture and laser therapy for dogs and cats in the comfort of their home. We like integrating modalities such as acupuncture or laser to achieve a more holistic treatment plan if the pet owner is interested.
All new acupuncture or laser therapy patients receive a comprehensive examination, allowing for veterinary and Western medical treatments. This integrative approach also provides for various diagnostic procedures such as bloodwork, urinalysis, ultrasounds, etc. Often, a combination of therapies may be the most effective.
Acupuncture
Veterinary acupuncture for dogs and cats effectively treats various conditions and diseases in pets. Besides being frequently used to treat pain for such issues as recovery from surgery, it can also be effective for the following conditions:
Back pain/intervertebral disk disease or other neurologic problems
Chronic pain, such as is experienced with arthritis/degenerative joint disease
In conjunction with chemotherapy – to decrease side effects, help with nausea, etc.
Gastrointestinal disorders – vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, etc.
Urinary disorders – chronic renal failure (kidney disease), incontinence, cystitis, etc.
Most pets tolerate the placement of the needles very well, and most get very relaxed and calm during and after the treatment. Some issues may respond well to just one or two treatments. However, some longer-term or chronic problems often take a series of visits or periodic visits for the rest of their life. We will discuss this with you at the first appointment.
Electro-acupuncture
Veterinary electro-acupuncture is a variant of acupuncture where a very low current of electricity is passed between pairs of acupuncture needles. Electro-acupuncture is often especially beneficial for neurologic disorders such as Intervertebral Disk Disease.
Aqua-puncture
Aqua-puncture is the injection of a sterile solution (usually saline or liquid vitamin B-12) into the acupuncture points of your pet.
For pets who do not tolerate traditional acupuncture needles for the recommended length of time (needles are usually in for 10 to 40 minutes), aqua-puncture is an alternative that provides some time-released pressure to the points after the injection. The injections may also be given after a traditional acupuncture session to have a more prolonged effect on specific points.
Laser Therapy
Laser therapy is very effective for speeding healing after injury or surgery. It involves the painless application of light energy to an affected joint or tissue to provide an anti-inflammatory effect or to stimulate tissue repair. It can be helpful as a treatment plan for back pain, arthritis, and even some skin conditions. Like acupuncture, there are very few side effects; typically, more than one treatment is required for maximal benefit.
